Open Office is similar to MS Office 2003. It does not yet support the XML features of the newer Office 2007 suite.

Includes products similar to Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

We suggest this free software for those people who do not have Office 2003.

PLUS, it is good to be informed on what is happening in the market - Open Office is a strong component of the free software movement.

If you can afford to purchase MS Office 2007 (going for around $80 on eBay), then we recommend doing so, as your productivity will be significantly higher than with Office 2003 or Open Office, and you'll be able to read .docx files (becoming common)

Sea-Monkey is a great free editor for creating HTML (web) pages.

It is an improved version of another HTML editor,  NVU.

We believe MS Expressions (available on eBay for around $70) is a better tool for website creation, as it can handle PHP and .ASPX pages too. But if you can't afford to buy Expressions, then start with Sea-Monkey.

An essential utility for uploading files to your online website. Very easy to use. Also great for downloading files from the online site - a good idea is to backup your online files directly on your computer's hard disk.

CoreFTP is the best free utility for file transfers.

There are several free utilities for generating PDF files from Word, Excel, etc. files. We have used PDF995 for many years - it has never failed, even in cases where Adobe's own product fails (typically on very large Word or PowerPoint files).

An advantage for job seekers of the PDF format is that the appearance of the document is generally better than with Word, which displays the spell-check squiggly lines. Where permitted, submit your resume as a PDF file instead of a Word file.


Did you know that Adobe Acrobat Reader can "read out loud" a PDF document? It is a great way to catch spelling and clumsy constructions in a resume and cover letter.

Make free conference calls. You can have up to 150 people on a call. Only drawback is that the calls are long distance.

The "software" part is the ability to do webex-like presentations for very low cost compared to competition. This is a great way for Success Teams to collaborate. The $9.00 monthly charge if amortized across 4 or 5 team members easily offsets the cost of driving to three or four meetings. And it saves precious time too.

Chrome is a new browser from Google, and it performs faster than Firefox and Internet Explorer on my computer. I like the ability to lift up a tab within a browser window and move it to a different location, so I can keep like websites together.

Google Wave is a powerful productivity package whose central purpose is to promote collaboration. It has been called  "Twitter on crack", or "Lotus Notes on Steroids".

Great service for sharing files - certain organizations do not allow attachments with external emails (to prevent virus attacks) or they restrict the size of attached files. This great site enables you to get around those limitations.

Note Amazon has a similar service, called S3, but it is not free. While there are other file sharing sites, filesanywhere has the richest feature set
